Ta Prohm Temple is known as the “Tomb Raider” Temple. It is one of the most visited complexes in Cambodia’s Angkor region.
Built in 1186AD by King Jayavarman VII and was one of the first temples built during Jayavarman VII’s prolific reign. Ta Prohm was originally built as a Buddhist monastery and university. The temple was called “Queen’s Tomb” to worship King’s Mother.
In the 15th century, the capital was destroyed by Siamese, forcing Khmer King left to Phnom Penh. All the jewellery got stolen by the army and there are only holes left nowadays that travellers can see during their visit.
With centuries of neglect, a species of Ficus, the Giant Strangler Fig trees took control of the temple. Since the temple is made with no mortar, the loose stones enabled the quick spread of roots.
The temple was covered by the jungle and had been forgotten for many centuries until 1860, it was rediscovered by Herri Mouhot, a French botanist.
In 2001, the temple was chosen to be the movie set of Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie playing the main character. Since this movie has gained popularity in many countries, Ta Prohm has been more well-known to the world.
This walk-through of the Ta Prohm Temple was done during my recent travel to Cambodia with my wife.
As the structure at Ta Prohm was completely enveloped by the jungle, it was decided that it was nearly impossible to restore it to its former glory. The conservation and restoration of Ta Prohm is a partnership project of the Archaeological Survey of India and the APSARA (Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap).
