Photography in 1862 was still a new, fiddly and challenging process, and Francis Bedford's method was invented only a decade before he joined the royal tour of Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales.
Co-curator, Madeleine Cater, takes a look in 'A Quick Snap? Challenges of Equipment, Exposure and the Environment in Photographing the Royal Tour'.
'Sights of Wonder: Photographs from the 1862 Royal Tour' is the Barber Institute's first digital exhibition. Madeleine is one of the ten student co-curators, currently studying for an MA in Art History and Curating at the University of Birmingham.
Inspired by 'Sights of Wonder', the student curators have produced video talks exploring key themes prompted by Francis Bedford’s photographs.
