Most iPhone photographers know about Night Mode, but few people know that it also can be used for time lapse videos. For this to work, you must have an iPhone 12 or later, but an iPhone 14 will be best.
You will need to wait for the right moment to record these - sunrise works well, moonrises are great, a moonrise at dusk can work, stars can work but require a little editing. Sunsets are not so good because the time lapse begins when there is full light, and I believe the iPhone won’t switch to nightmare during a recording, so when it gets dark the video gets pretty noisy.
All you have to do is select time lapse mode, there is no button to turn on night mode.
You must mount your phone on a tripod or lean it against something - the camera software will not enable night mode unless your camera is steady.
When you are ready to begin recording, just press the shutter button to begin. Let it run as long as you like, it will not run out of space. When you are done just press the shutter button again to stop recording.
Then just look at your great video in the photos app! If your scene is very dark, like just stars, you’ll have to do a quick edit to change your black point.
An that’s it, you’re making night mode time lapse videos!
