STORYLINE
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Tuesday as he continued his tour of the region.
He is due to hold talks with President Michel Suleiman and prime minister-designate, Saad Hariri, as part of efforts to keep the Middle East peace process on track.
Steinmeier met Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus earlier on Tuesday.
On Monday, the German minister visited Israel and the Palestinian territories.
He held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, as well as opposition leader Tzipi Livni.
He also met with President Shimon Peres and Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat.
