China's President is facing the greatest challenge to his signature zero-COVID strategy after unprecedented anti-lockdown protests spread across the country, in major cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan and even the capital Beijing.
The protests began in response to China’s strict sero-COVID lockdown measures..but soon evolved into a call for Xi Jinping to resign. And for the communist party to end.
The catalyst for the protests was a deadly apartment fire in the city of Urumqi, in China’s far west.
According to local officials, the deadly fire was caused by a faulty power strip that caught fire on the 15th floor of a high-rise apartment, but it took the fire department over three hours to put out the flames.
Videos went viral on Chinese social media, showing firetrucks unable to get close to the flames. Many questioned whether COVID restrictions resulted in delayed access for the firefighters, and left residents unable to escape.
The city of Urumqi had been in lockdown for more than 100 days, since August.
Hundreds of angry Shanghai residents gathered on consecutive nights over the weekend, symbolically on Middle Urumqi Road , lighting candles and demanding an end to zero-tolerance COVID measures.
Some openly dared to chant, "Communist Party step down" and "Step down, Xi Jinping, step down."
