The Home Secretary has said that she wants the new immigration system to ensure the UK can attract “the brightest and the best”. Many of those who have skills which the UK needs have been displaced from their home country by conflict and are unable to access normal Tier 2 labour market mobility routes because of this precarious position. The vast majority of refugees live in countries neighbouring their country of origin where limited opportunities can mean their professional skills are unused and their chance to rebuild their lives stays on hold. While refugee resettlement places remain a vital route to bring the most vulnerable refugees to safety, places are limited globally. Complementary pathways, such as employment routes, can help refugees access protection and solutions when other options are limited.
