In this episode of Turning Leak Detection Into Repair Work, we are at a pool/spa combo with a leak in the trunk line.
When we arrived at the pool, the water level was full. We walked the pool and took note of the return valves, lights, drains and areas we wanted to listen to throughout the pool using our PoolScope.
We immediately noticed high amounts of cracking in concrete, including a crack that ran through the area of the skimmer and into the pool itself. with listening and dye testing, that crack proved not to be leaking. The homeowner will keep an eye on that situation.
As we listened in the spa, we were aware of a leak as listening at some fittings, we heard water the sound of water escaping. We static tested the lines, a technique taught in the Online Leak Detection Training Certification Program by LeakTronics. Several of the fittings we dye tested at showed a dye pull. This indicated that there was in fact a leak in the trunk line.
We used a technique where we put the pipes under pressure and listen through the spa wall at the suspect area where the trunk line runs. When we listened through the spa wall with our SM-1 Side Mic, we could clearly, distinctly and accurately hear where the leak was in the pipe and we marked the area for repair.
Turning the leak detection into paid repair work, we bid the repair with the customer and were given the work. The next day, we came in to fix the issues we found.
We cut the area and saw the leak gushing from the pipe, as you see in the video. We removed the broken section; we show you the break in the pipe in the video, and we installed a plumbers loop in the pipe to return the spa to full function. Repairing concrete, the job was completed, the customer was happy and we got paid.
