UNSW Cybercrime Expert Richard Buckland says the cyberattack on Australia was “not very sophisticated” and the fact “that we’ve been caught out so badly speaks to a widespread underinvestment in cyber security.
All levels of the Australian government and Australia’s private sector are being targeted in a cyberattack reportedly launched by a state-based actor.
Mr Bucklands told Sky News host Peter Gleeson the cyber-criminals launched sites inside Australia and employed strategies in the public domain quite “cleverly” so as to avoid detection.
“The way to find it would probably be through traditional intelligence sources rather than through them leaving cyber-clues," he said.
“We really need to hope we have a wholistic intelligence operation” if we are to have any hope of identifying the perpetrators.
Mr Buckland said Russia conducted a similar cyberattack in the Ukraine which attacked power stations causing blackouts and which was ultimately crippling for a cold nation which required electricity to survive.
He said the attack on Australia was “almost like a bullying strategy” which not only damaged systems but drained Australian “self-esteem and morale” in a broader sense.
