In a 2021 prison census by the Committee to Protect Journalists, it was founded that a new global record of 293 journalists were jailed worldwide for their work. As of 2021, it was reported by CPJ that Egypt was the third worst jailer of journalists with 25 reporters imprisoned. Ethiopia was ranked as the second worst jailer in sub-Saharan Africa after Eritrea.
VOA’s Simegnish Yekoye alongside her co-hosts Ndimyake Mwakalyelye, Auriane Itangishaka, and Amina Aliyu spoke to Angela Quintal, Africa Program Coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists about the rise in the number of jailed journalists on the African continent. Angela discusses in-depth how press freedom has deteriorated due to the rise in conflict in Africa. She also shares details of cases of missing journalists on the continent.
