The United States remembered the 7 astronauts who were killed on the Columbia space shuttle this week when it disintegrated during reentry 10 years ago. Damage to the left wing caused by insulating foam striking the shuttle's fragile ceramic underside during Columbia's liftoff left the spacecraft vulnerable to superheating caused by reentry into the atmosphere.
