(27 Apr 1994) For the first time, the media have been given access to meetings
of the two remaining Commissions responsible for observing an
armistice signed in 1953 by North Korean and the United Nations
Command (UNC) to end the Korean war. The mood was relaxed and
jovial as North Korean and UNC officers exchanged friendly remarks
and explained their mission to reporters. Among those present were
North Korean Major Pyon Chol-Ho and American navy Lietenant
Commander Mark Monti. Their meeting was held at the "truce
village" in Panmunjom on the North-South Korean border. Major Pyon
said that he'd come along to keep the peace and gave details of
the negotiations. In a sign of goodwill, Pyon held up a can of
American beer while Lieutenant Commander Monti did the same with
North Korean lager. Swedish delegate Major General Bernard Sandoz
said that "we are proof of the will of the international community
that this armistice should stay as long as there is no peace
treaty".
