The first SLSO Songs of America installment takes musicians and vocalist Malena Smith to Malcolm W Martin Memorial Park, an East St. Louis location with sweeping panoramic views of downtown St. Louis named after a man who dedicated his life to serving his country and community.
There, musicians give the premiere of a new arrangement by Adam Maness of “America the Beautiful,” the stirring anthem with text by Katharine Lee Bates inspired by the breathtaking mountaintop of Pike’s Peak in Colorado. Learn more about the work by visiting [ Ссылка ].
Vocalist Malena Smith Music: “Initially, it felt ironic to sing this gorgeous song that proclaims the beauty of our country during such a divisive time as we stand against racism and fight for equitable change for black Americans. However, as I studied this song, I believe that there is a vivid element of hope, both lyrically and melodically, that I connected to.”
