European Turtle Dove call at RSPB's Minsmere reserve, Eastern England. Turtle Dove, Streptopelia turtur, is one of those British Birds in decline and calling birds are a particularly coveted sight by birders in Britain. European Turtle Dove call is a soft "purring" which is very distinctive and easy to recognize. I found this individual perched on a pole in a secluded part of the bird reserve where I was able to watch it perform the Turtle Dove purring as well as preen. When I was first starting birding, seeing a Turtle Dove sitting on a post like this would have been a fairly common sighting in the summer but a real sign of the times is that this one caused quite a stir and attracted quite a few birders to enjoy watching it.
