2. SOUNDBITE (English) Lindsey Graham, U.S. Senator:
“Yesterday was an emotional day for the people of Israel and for Senator Blumenthal and myself. We spent the whole day talking to different groups about the experience of October 7th. We met with Bibi, Dermer, the speaker. We're going to meet with Gantz today and Gallant, and then we'll be shoving off to the UAE and Saudi Arabia.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Lindsey Graham, U.S. Senator:
“Here's what I'm going to tell Saudi Arabia. We can get you a treaty through the Senate, between the United States and Saudi Arabia, a defense agreement like you have with Japan and Australia, if you do it on President Biden's watch. The next president would have a very difficult time getting 67 votes.”
5. Graham and Blumenthal
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Senator:
“Now there is a historic moment of opportunity. It really is a magnificent potential achievement with enduring effect, and that is to match successes on the battlefield with diplomatic successes that will lead toward a cessation in fighting, a path to normalizing relations with other countries in the region, bringing home the hostages, providing more humanitarian aid and rebuilding and healing, as well as reducing civilian casualties if the fighting continues in some form. This historic opportunity is not only for the people of Israel, but the world."

STORYLINE:
Two U.S. senators said Tuesday that they believed there was a “historic moment of opportunity” a year after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks to advance toward a normalization agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Rep. Lindsey Graham and Dem. Richard Blumenthal were visiting Israel when they made their remarks at a press conference in Jerusalem.
They said they were continuing to the UAE and Saudi Arabia and planned to bring up the idea of normalization while in the kingdom.
The Biden administration was pushing for a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia before Oct. 7 last year.
The attack and the war it sparked shined a light on the quest for Palestinian statehood and appeared to derail the effort toward a normalization deal.
