Do you know the FAA's 3 Definitions of Nighttime? For the FAA night time is defined differently depending on what kinds of operations or regulations are being considered. Here is a summary of what you can do when.
After sunset: Position Lights must be on
End of Evening Civil Twilight (~30 minutes after sunset): Aircraft must be equipped for night flight and pilots can log night flying
1 Hour after sunset: Pilots must gain night currency (3 takeoffs and landings to a full stop) during this time in order to carry passengers at night.
