This video was captured using the actual game on an actual Nintendo 64. A few failures to complete races have been removed for your consideration and enjoyment.
This is the legendary F-Zero X. Legendary because this installment is thought by many to be the greatest F-Zero of the entire franchise. While I do think that it is great, I actually think that award goes to the Gamecube version F-Zero GX. But this video is on F-Zero X.
F-Zero X was not as widely praised as it is now days. When this was released, game magazines like EGM dogged it by saying that the graphics were too plain and dull. Obviously nobody cared what they thought because F-Zero fans could see right through that line of BS. The first F-Zero was really fast and really smooth. F-Zero X was twice as fast and twice as smooth. How fast and smooth? 60 frames per second. Yes, the framerate that the consoles of today struggle to keep was this game's constant. Not only that but the A.I. was more brutal than ever. To even this out, F-Zero X featured shunting and spinning attacks to bite back at the brutal A.I. This was also the first installment to give you boost at the expense of your energy meter. You could boost your meter down to nothing and then pray for a recharge strip, or use it sparingly. Your choice, but boosting more often wins races while boosting less often ensures that you finish the race. I'm in it to win it so I boost constantly. The controls were tighter than ever and the racing is absolutely frenetic. The music again is legendary. It's weird how many N64 games suffered from muffled sound and music due to the low sampling rates in order to optimize the limited storage of cartridges, but this game suffered with none of that. All the sound effects are crystal clear and the music is CD quality. No, Nintendo did nothing wrong with this game. With 30 A.I. opponents trying to knock you off the track at break neck speeds, the only people who wanna talk trash about this game simply just suck at it. This game is just absolute greatness in physical form.
