The Knights Templar first started in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, a Crusader state established in the Levant in 1099 following the First Crusade. This area corresponds to modern-day Israel, Palestine, and parts of neighboring countries. The founders were French knights, with Hugues de Payens and Godfrey de Saint-Omer among the most notable. Their initial purpose was twofold:
The immediate and primary purpose of the Knights Templar was to ensure the safety of Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. After the First Crusade captured Jerusalem and other sacred sites, pilgrims from across Christendom flocked to the Holy Land. The journey was fraught with danger, including attacks from brigands and raiders. The Templars sought to provide a secure passage for these pilgrims, protecting them from harm.
Beyond their initial mission of protection, the Knights Templar quickly became a significant military force in the region.
