(4 Oct 2020) Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov cast his ballot in his country's parliamentary elections Sunday.
Jeenbekov, the country's former prime minister, was elected in 2017.
Sixteen parties are vying for the 120 seats in the parliament, which has significant powers in appointing the prime minister and has occasionally acted as a counterweight to the president and cabinet in recent Kyrgyz history.
The current parliament is ruled by a coalition in which Jeenbekov's Social Democratic Party (SPDK) has the most seats — at 38.
Since his election Jeenbekov has fallen out with his former SPDK ally and presidential predecessor Almazbek Atambayev.
Atambayev was arrested in the summer of 2019 on corruption charges after a dramatic raid on his residence and sentenced to 11 years in jail.
