The gharial is a unique and visually distinctive crocodilian species native to the Indian subcontinent. The gharial has an elongated, narrow snout that resembles a thin fish. Its snout is lined with sharp, interlocking teeth designed for grasping slippery prey. Adult males develop a prominent bulbous growth at the tip of their snout known as a "ghara" or "pot," which is used for vocalization and courtship displays. Gharials are among the largest crocodile species but are relatively slim compared to other crocodilians. Adult males can reach lengths of up to 18-20 feet (5.5-6 meters), while females are slightly smaller, averaging around 11-14 feet (3.5-4.5 meters). Gharials primarily inhabit freshwater river systems in parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. Gharials prefer clean water with sandy or muddy riverbanks for nesting. Unlike other crocodilians, the gharial has a specialized diet consisting mainly of fish. Its narrow snout and sharp teeth allow it to swiftly catch fish underwater. Gharials are primarily piscivorous, but they may also consume crustaceans, frogs, and other small aquatic prey.
