Labour shadow culture secretary Lucy Powell has said the BBC's suspension of Gary Lineker for his criticism of the government's asylum policy is like something out of 'Putin's Russia'.

Speaking in the Commons during an UQ (urgent question), Powell told MPs, 'What does [Lopez] think it looks like to the outside world that a much-loved sports presenter is taken off air for tweeting something the government doesn’t like?
It sounds more like Putin’s Russia to me.' Culture minister Julia Lopez hit back at Powell, saying the matter was an issue for the BBC to resolve internally.
