Traditional methods of plant count assessment rely on manual sampling a portion of a field. Researchers and farmers usually visit a corner of a field to assess germination quality, seedling emergence rate, replanting needs and management zones and extrapolate that data to their entire farm. In this process, the researcher misses to get the full picture of seeds that fail to emerge and could potentially make wrong decisions.
Counting plants and recording it manually is a strenuous exercise that could take a week or more to collect from a large field. Given its complexity, agronomists are unable to capture this data precisely.
But now, with drone and computer vision technology (AI/ML) the whole process takes only a few hours.
