The Paris skies lit up with a spectacular firework display on Monday as France commemorated the centenary of World War One on Bastille Day.
The traditional celebrations of France's national day, also known as Bastille Day, were this year dedicated to the victims of the Great War.
Bastille Day marks the July 14, 1789, storming of the Bastille prison by angry Paris crowds that helped spark the French Revolution.
Thousands of Parisians and tourists turned up to see the pirotechnics and light display for the first time ever fired from the iconic Eiffel Tower. The 35 minute show, dedicated to the theme of war and peace, was accompanied by
classical music -- Verdi's Requiem and Beethoven's Ode to Joy and modern classic -- John Lennon's Imagine.
Earlier during the day French President Francois Hollande watched French soldiers wearing 1914-style uniforms and military representatives from all the countries which took part in World War One parade along the Champs-Elysees boulevard.
