The Al-Nusra Front was initially an offshoot of ISIS, at that time still Al-Qaeda in Iraq, and in 2011 became embroiled in the Syrian Civil War alongside elements of the Free Syrian Army seeking to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad. In 2013 it split from ISIS drawing the two into a civil war within a civil war, as around a third of the Al-Nusra group swore allegiance to Al-Qaeda and defied a merger with Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi's group. They became one of the deadliest factions of the FSA, though they distanced themselves from Al-Qaeda in 2016 their Islamist, Jihadi credentials are undeniable.
