Gulli Briem is best known for being the drummer with Mezzoforte, the Icelandic band formed 1977 in Reykjavik by 4 teenage friends with a mutual interest in fusion and funk music. In 1983 the world wide hit, Garden Party, from their 4th album made Mezzoforte the first Icelandic band ever to achieve international recognition.
+30 years, 11 albums and over a thousand concerts later, the band is still going strong with 3 of 4 original members (sometimes all 4) touring regularly with a 6-10 piece band.
Gulli has been nominated five times as the drummer of the year in Iceland and has studied classical percussion with Reynir Sigurdsson as well as music theory at the FIH Jazz conservatory in Reykjavik 1980-1983 and The Musicians Institute in Los Angeles in 1992 with Joe Porcaro, Ralph Humphrey, Marc Rio and Joe Bracato.
We went to visit Gulli in the studio and recorded the following track, performed on his Yamaha Recording Custom in Surf Green finish and Yamaha 14" x 5.5" Aluminum Snare (RAS1455).
