RIO GRANDE VALLEY – In the final home game for seniors Megan Johnson and Zhane Templeton and graduate student Desirea Buerge, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team blew out the Grand Canyon University Lopes 66-47 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Buerge led the Vaqueros (13-15, 8-7 WAC) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior Amara Graham scored 13 points with five rebounds. Junior Trelynn Tyler scored 11 points with seven rebounds and two steals. Johnson finished with 10 points, a season-high tying nine rebounds and three assists.
Tavia Rowell led the Lopes (15-11, 10-5 WAC) with 15 points. Da’jah Daniel scored eight points with 10 rebounds.
The Lopes led 6-5 in the opening minutes. The Vaqueros responded by scoring the next nine points, thanks in-part to a three and a jumper by Graham, to take the lead.
Then, with the lead 14-9, the Vaqueros went on an 8-2 run, capped by a Johnson free throw, to go up 22-11.
One basket later, with the score 22-13, the Vaqueros embarked on a five-minute 18-0 run during which time Tyler scored six points and Johnson scored four. The Vaqueros hit six of their seven shots, including a pair of threes, during the run, while holding the Lopes 0-for-4 from the field and forcing four turnovers.
After the run saw the Vaqueros take their largest lead of the game at 40-13, the Lopes scored nine-straight points as part of a 26-9 run to pull within 49-39.
Buerge answered with a three-point play and a jumper as part of a 7-1 run to push the Vaqueros’ lead to 16, putting the game on ice.
