Tržnica Dolac
Located just steps away from the main city square, Dolac is Zagreb's busiest open market. It became a major trading spot in the 1930s. It consists of two levels: an enclosed market on the ground floor and an open plateau above it. At the indoor market you can find fish, eggs, dairy and meat products. At the outdoor farmer's market you can buy fruits and vegetables.
Many of the products are home-grown or home-made by small-scale farmers from neighboring villages, who then come to Dolac to sell their goods. Most locals have their favorite stands and sellers, the latter often referred to as "kum" or "kumica". To honor hard-working sellers, a statue representing one such farmer has been located at the top of the stairs in 2006. The statue is entitled "Barica" and was designed by Stjepan Gračan. It was inspired by a "kumica" who had dedicated 50 years to working at Dolac.
Fun fact: my grandmother was a small-scale farmer and once a week took her fruits and veggies to local markets to sell, including Dolac.
