Former screen star Brigitte Bardot, who has become an animal rights activist, appealed to Romanian authorities on Thursday (05/02) not to kill thousands of stray dogs roaming the streets of Bucharest.
Bardot, in Romania to promote her new book of memoirs, also appealed to the public to adopt the dogs.
She said adopted two pups at a city pound and gave a third pup to a Romanian foundation that protects dogs and fed dogs at the pound that were due to be killed.
City authorities in Bucharest estimate that up to 200,000 stray dogs roam the streets. An average 50 people a day are bitten by stray dogs, many of whom carry rabies. Doctors say the hospital emergency wards are treating hundreds of dog bite cases each month. All are immediately inoculated against rabies.
