Winter Sowing Season Is FINALLY Here and I am here for it! I am convinced this is the easiest, absolute best way to start seeds! I want to show you my favorite way to start seeds using the winter sowing method. HOW EXCITING!

What is Winter Sowing
Winter Sowing is the process of sowing seeds outside in containers over the winter months, allowing the seeds to be protected in the container yet living outside in the elements. The process allows the seeds to go through a sometimes necessary period of cold temperatures called stratification. As the outside temperatures warm in the spring, the seeds break dormancy and the seeds begin to germinate. The outcome is nothing short of magical. The ability to not worry with grow lights, heat mats, watering, hardening off, etc., and start the season with healthy seedlings is incredible.

Seed Selection
Be sure to check the seeds you wish to sow to ensure they will do well with this method. According to Penn State Extension check for seeds with the following terms: reseeds, colonizes, self sows, hardy, seedlings can withstand frost, sow outdoors in later autumn or early winter, sow outdoors in early spring while frosts may still occur, needs pre-chilling, requires stratification.

Timeframe
The timeframe to start winter sowing will depend on your zone. A good rule of thumb is to start once the freezing temperatures are consistent and after the first day of Winter- generally from December to March. The biggest mistake is starting them too soon so be sure you know your zone and when its best to start for that zone.
