PrEP and PEP...what’s the difference? Both protect against HIV! PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is like birth control but for HIV. PrEP is taken every day. PrEP provides ongoing protection against HIV. PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) must begin within 72 hours of possible exposure to HIV and be continued for 28 days. PEP is intended for emergency situations only. Both require a prescription from a healthcare provider.
