Hi everyone, Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at these ShockStraps ratcheting tie-down straps. These are gonna be a good solution for tying down things like your motorcycles, ATVs, or any sort of shifting load, things that have suspension, because they've got some unique technology to make sure that they always stay tight on your gear. Let's check 'em out. For the most part, these are much like your standard ratchet strap. You've got your S hooks at the very end.
These ones are really nice because they've got the keeper on there to make sure they don't come undone and the vinyl coating to protect your gear. Moving up to the ratcheting mechanism, it's a pretty large one with a protective zinc coating to keep it free of rust and corrosion and a pretty large handle to use. Where it starts to differ though, is the tension right here with this urethane piece. What this is gonna do as we tighten it down is actually stretch and expand. So on our loads that have suspension or moving parts, if things we're to shift or that suspension we're to compress, what would happen is some of that slack would get taken out of the stretched piece, keeping the strap tight on the vehicle.
So for anything that does have a moving part, this is gonna help a lot. So that urethane piece might be kind of hard to explain or really envision what it's going to be doing, but after using just some regular ratchet straps to transport this motorcycle and working with the ShockStraps today, I can tell you I definitely feel a difference. Overall, it's far more secure and as we we're driving around with it, I did notice a better difference than just how stable it was being when we we're using it. The strap itself is gonna be an inch and a half wide and 7 feet long. In our setup today, it worked really well in this part at the front of the motorcycle because that length was enough to reach down to the carrier, loop back up around the handlebars, and back down to the carrier again.
You can see because of the size of those S hooks, we're using the integrated soft tie-down loops to hook the S hooks into, so we're not needing any sort of tie-down rings on the carrier. You could totally use that if you're using this in conjunction with a trailer or a truck bed. But the tie-down points for us today were just a bit too small for those hooks. As far as the length goes, there is one caveat to this. We couldn't use this at the back of our motorcycle because you can see how short of a distance we're going from our target down point to the frame of the motorcycle.
For the ShockStrap to work, you're gonna need a minimum of 29 inches from your tie-down point to the tie-down point on your vehicle or on your trailer. That's because this needs some room to expand and stretch and all this strap in between needs some room as well. Without that minimum of 29 inches, it's not gonna be able to do its job properly. And then for weight capacity, you're gonna have a safe working load limit of 1000 pounds and a break strength of 3000 pounds, and that's per strap, so these ones are more than up to the job. Setting up the ShockStraps, pretty straightforward. We're gonna install the ratcheting mechanism first. So for our case, on this motorcycle carrier, we have some designated tie-down points but the S hooks are far too large to fit into those tie-down points. Luckily, we've got the soft loops built right in on both ends, so what we're gonna do is actually feed this up and around the bars of the carrier, hook the S hook to the soft loop and do the same on the other side to get this all secured. So whenever everything's all tightened down the ratcheting mechanism will be right around here and this portion here will get stretched out whenever we put tension on it. For the free end of the strap we're gonna actually sneak this between the ramp on the carrier and the carrier itself because we want to have access to that ramp whenever we are parked. So that'll go through there. Same process with that S hook, looping back to the soft tie-down loop and the free end can go up over our handlebars or some other sturdy place on the motorcycle, avoiding any brake lines, to meet the ratcheting mechanism down at the bottom. We'll open it up, feed the free end of the strap through the middle, pull out all the slack that we can and we can start to tighten this down. So as we're going, we wanna watch this portion right here with the urethane. Right now I can fit my hand in
