Maurizio Cazzati (1616-1678) was an exceptionally prolific Italian Baroque composer known for carefully numbering all of his publications with opus numbers. Cazzati's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he published a total of sixty-six work numbers, with many reprints, some overseen by Cazzati himself or others while he was still alive, and some posthumous reprints.
One of Cazzati's notable works, "Alma redemptoris mater," represents a pinnacle of a tradition of solo motets with violins, which was a widely popular form in the second half of the 17th century that Cazzati helped pioneer. Cazzati's stylistic development moved away from the "seconda pratica" of the early 17th century and towards a more harmonically structured and formally organized "pre-Corellian" style.
