Louise and Walt are 2 wild Virginia Opossums who use The Possum Platform frequently. Walt is likely her son or a nephew. He’s a young adult and she’s a full grown possum. They always seem happy to see each other.

Lots of the other possums from the neighborhood actually went away for the holiday so I was delighted to find out these 2 decided to come to ring in the New Year at The Possum Platform. Right at midnight you can hear the sound of fireworks and explosions. I’m glad Walt and Louise didn’t go on vacation. It’s rare to see possums at New Year’s or most federal holidays, for that matter.

I can’t stress enough that these are not pets. They’re wild opossums who were doing all of this anyway for decades before we started observing them carefully. Yes they’re adorable but they are wild animals who were here first. They were here with dinosaurs. We’re just living beside them with respect. I encourage you to do so as well. We’re grateful we get to see into their lives.
