Between 10-15 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent needs to be removed from the atmosphere annually to meet the goals set out in the Paris Agreement. While reforestation plays a significant role in this, removing around 3.6 gigatonnes of CO2E per year alone, it is clear that more needs to be done. The Future Forest Company is using an IPCC-approved negative emission technology to remove even more harmful gasses.

Crisis response expert Alex Cooper, COO of the Future Forest Company, is trialling and deploying a complimentary carbon removal technology - a self-sustaining pyrolysis process - to convert unstable carbon into stable carbon to remove gigatonnes of CO2E.

With support from the Sustainable Innovation Fund, the Future Forest Company was able to develop a strategic plan to produce biochar; a charcoal created from forestry waste that prevents carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. It’s estimated that biochar could help to remove 10 times more CO2 than reforestation alone, and the Future Forest Company hopes to improve access to biochar in food manufacture, agriculture, and more to facilitate decarbonisation across multiple industries.
