Dave gives a few pointers on floating gears, in his Peterbilt, 18 speed transmission.
Floating gears in a big rig vs double clutching is an ongoing controversy. Many professional truck drivers prefer to use the clutch when upshifting and downshifting, while many others prefer to float gears.
It all boils down to personal preference.
Personally, I use a combination of both methods: I float gears and use the clutch... depending on what I'm doing, the terrain etc.
It's an argument that will NEVER be settled with a right or a wrong way.
I recommend that new CDL drivers learn how to double clutch when they are learning so they know how to do it. Once they become more comfortable with the double clutching procedure, then I would recommend trying to shift gears without using the clutch.
But again, personal preference rules!
