In this video, Steve Nagy and Chris Cherry demonstrate the flammability of the new A2L refrigerant, R32, in comparison to R290. R454B shares a similar flammability profile to R32.
Both R454B and R32 are environmentally friendly refrigerants, representing a significant step towards healthier climate conditions while enhancing the efficiency of Heat Pumps and Air Conditioners.
Interestingly, we found it challenging to ignite R32. We had only a limited amount remaining in the charging hoses after installing our first R32 system. We conducted this test in compliance with EPA standards and regulations by using a minimal amount of R32. After carefully metering in the refrigerant, we closed the valves and added another hose (without fittings) to reach into the chamber.
While R32 is classified as a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant, we strongly advise all HVAC technicians and installers to obtain A2L certification and adhere to all relevant regulations. It’s crucial to note that R32 cannot be directly compared to R290 in terms of flammability.
R290 is pure propene, and evaporator coils can often leak refrigerants. Therefore, never charge an older R22 Heat Pump or Air Conditioner with R290, as even the smallest spark can lead to explosions, as illustrated in the video.
