The Word of God thru Parables
The Parable of the Talents
Matt 25:14-30
In this story a man with three servants, presumably the Lord gives talents (coins of great value) to his servants and expects them to invest them wisely. These are considered to be gifts that God had given us such as divine mercy, forgiveness and salvation.
The lesson here is to make use of these God given gifts and not waste them or bury them. The first two servants illustrate this point but the third servant who does not understand the nature of the gift buries his talent and doesn't use it and therefore loses it. This parable is not intended to refer to a person's natural ability such as being able to play the violin, sing opera or be a sport's champion. It is only a coincidence that this large unit of money at Jesus 's time was called the "talent" and today it means a "marked natural ability."
