The EA897 family of engines have gone through various upgrades since their release in 2004. The second generation 3.0 TDI engines debuted in 2010 and have gone on to be used in a wide range of VAG vehicles. In 2017 this engine family was upgraded again and started using a “D” at the start of the engine identification codes as they now comply with the EURO 6 emission regulations.
These engines are used in Volkswagen Amarok and Touareg and various Audi models such as A4, A5, A6, A7 and Q7 with the following identification codes.
DCPC
DEWA
DDVC
DDVB
DDVE
DDVF
DEWB
DHXA
DHXC
DCPE
DDXC
CRCA
CJGA
CJGC
CJMA
CLZB
CNRB
The EA897 cooling system is now called a thermal management system and it is split into two parts. There is a coolant circuit for the cylinder head and another for the cylinder block.
The cylinder head circuit includes the coolant passages of both heads, EGR cooler, engine oil cooler, transmission cooler, heater core and radiator. The cylinder block circuit is isolated by a vacuum actuated ball valve mounted in the valley of the engine, to the rear of the left cylinder head. When closed this valve will only allow the coolant to circulate in the block, which reduces warm-up time.
The ball valve is called the Coolant Shut-Off valve, it is opened or closed by the vacuum applied via a solenoid valve, which receives a PWM signal from the engine control unit (ECU) when the temperatures are within range
It seems that there is a common source of a coolant leak which first shows itself when coolant runs down the front engine, which could indicate that it is coming from the coolant pump. We believe that some are replacing the pump and still having a coolant leak from the same area.
Upon further investigation the coolant is found to be coming from one of the many cooling system components in the valley of the engine which are buried under the intake manifold with one common culprit.
