STORYLINE:
The US Embassy in Cuba resumed consular services and visa processing amid a spike in the irregular migration of Cubans to the US, with people lining up for appointments on Wednesday.
The consular section of the diplomatic service has been semi-paralysed since 2017, when then President Donald Trump withdrew the staff under the later unproven accusation of strange sonic attacks on his employees and under his policy of tightening of sanctions on the Caribbean nation.
A State Department spokesperson who was not authorised to be quoted by name told the Associated Press that a limited number of visas were being issued and only to parents of US citizens.
Javier Santana, a Cuban American dual citizen, said despite being able to speed up the immigration process, he didn't believe it would change the illegal migration trends.
According to the US Office of Customs and Border Protection, nearly 80,000 Cubans were apprehended at the border during the last six months, doubling the number of detentions recorded in the previous period.
