Giuseppe Garibaldi conquered Bergamo in 1859 during the Italian unification wars. Garibaldi must have made quite an impression on the people of Bergamo, he was able to recruit many soldiers into his mercenary army.
It is said that a significant number of the soldiers in Garibaldi's thousand man march of the red shirts on Sicily were from Bergamo. Thus the city earned the nickname Citta dei Mille (City of the Thousand).
The 6 kilometer network of walls surrounding the old town have remained largely unchanged since the Republic of Venice built them (1561-1588) for protection against enemies.
The Colleoni Chapel looks amazing and the interior of Santa Maria Maggiore has vaulted ceilings that are quite unique and very beautiful.
