From 26-28th February 2020, local activists and Extinction Rebellion joined forces to shut down operations at the Bradley Open-cast Mine in County Durham, voicing their objection to Banks Mining Group's proposal to expand mining operations at the site.
With coal power set to legally phase out in 2024 and just five operating coal power stations left in the UK, we're in the midst of a dangerous new coal mining scramble at the expense of our climate, local communities and the natural environment.
"Here in the North, we have a rich heritage and we’re proud of it. In the North East our people powered the industrial revolution with coal, steel and shipbuilding. The warmth and strength of our communities kept us going through some extremely hard times. At home we still don’t talk about these things. Even today its too painful, too raw, too complex. There was no just transition for the north and our people still suffer from those policies, let alone recent austerity cuts. Here, we all recognise that the world has become a far greedier and more thoughtless place. We know were not on the best path. We know there’s a better way." Jackie Scollen (Local resident, campaigner and member of XR Durham)
