The Birmingham clean-air zone (Caz) was introduced on June 1, 2021. The Caz boundary is the Middleway ring road, encompassing areas such as Digbeth, Westside, and the Jewellery and Chinese Quarters. The Caz applies to private cars, taxis, light and heavy goods vehicles, buses, and coaches. Diesel and LPG cars that do not comply with the latest Euro 6 emissions standard, as well as petrol cars that do not comply with Euro 4, 5, or 6 emissions standards, will incur a daily charge. Hybrid cars must comply with the emissions criteria of their internal combustion engine, while electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars are exempt. The daily charge for non-compliant private cars, taxis, and vans under 3.5 tonnes is £8, while buses, coaches, and goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will be charged £50 per day. Failure to pay the charges will result in a fine of £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days. Exemptions include vehicles in the disabled tax class, military vehicles, historic vehicles, and some agricultural and specialist vehicles. There is also a scrappage scheme for eligible drivers of non-compliant vehicles, offering £2,000 toward the cost of a compliant car or public transport travel credits. Payment can be made online or over the phone, and there are exemptions available for patients and visitors to certain medical centers within the zone.
