How young is too young for a knee replacement surgery, total knee replacement?
I'm Dr. Dan Albright at the Raleigh Orthopedic Clinic and I focus on knee replacements.
The quick answer is, we have no set age for doing a knee replacement in a young person. Of course, we prefer, traditionally prefer, to do knee replacements in 70-year-olds and older. Recently, in recent times, we do 60-year-olds, 50-year-olds, 30-year-olds. You do what you have to do. If someone is crippled by knee arthritis pain and can't move, you need a new knee, a knee replacement.
They typically last 20 years, sometimes longer. Younger people can wear out joint replacements, knee replacements quicker simply because they are younger. They are doing more. They are not as sedentary, as quiet, as a 70-year-old or 80-year-old with a knee replacement.
So we prefer to wait on knee replacements as long as possible, but again if a younger person is crippled by arthritis knee pain, you need to be fixed. You need a cure.
If you're interested in speaking more on that topic I am happy to consult with you anytime.
Thank you.
