Hey ya'll. This is an easy to follow tutorial on how to use a test kit to understand the safety of your drinking water according to EPA guidelines. This test kit is from Health Metric and was ordered from Amazon for about $30. (Arrived in about 2 days.) The test kit includes tests for: copper, lead, chlorine, nitrite, nitrate, pH, alkalinity, total hardness, and bacteria. It also came with a handout describing all the limits for EPA and how to match the results to real values. Overall, it took about 30 minutes to complete, other than the bacteria test which takes about 2 days. My results showed no issues with my water which is consistent with the annual drinking water quality report for my city.
If your water demonstrates concerning concentrations of any of these contaminants, please contact your city water to talk about it and think about using a filtration system for your water. I will link a few options below as well.
This test kit is a great way to have better confidence in your drinking water and perhaps teach the kids what safe drinking water looks like. A great activity with them is to take your drinking water and compare it to a nearby lake or ponds water to see the difference.
If you have questions about how to complete this test kit or about drinking water safety, please post a COMMENT, LIKE and SUBSCRIBE. I am happy to talk more about it!
