STORYLINE:
Thousands of left-wing protesters marched in Manila on Friday to demonstrate against the campaign by the President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, to amend the constitution and what they called a spate of political killings in the country.
Chanting "Oust Gloria," members of various left-wing groups jammed traffic leading to the presidential palace and passed through back streets to elude anti-riot police who blocked their path about a kilometre (0.6 miles) from the palace.
They were unable to reach the palace so held their protest at a busy street intersection.
There, they they speared a giant effigy of a rat with Arroyo's caricatured face.
They later burned the effigy.
Some of the protesters carried banners that read "Stop political killings," and "No to Charter Change, Oust Gloria."
Hundreds more left-wing protesters held a similar rally at the Makati financial district, where they denounced moves to amend the constitution and alleged suppression of political freedom in the country.
The protesters called on the Supreme Court to stop Arroyo and her supporters from revising the 19-year-old constitution to replace the current US-style two-chamber legislature with a unicameral parliament.
