A spokesperson from Facebook has revealed that it intends to make advertising its main source of income on its Messenger app.
There had been talk of Messenger generating revenue through online payments, but that plan now seems to have been dismissed. Messenger allows users to send money to one another and has just rolled out group payments.
However, in an interview with Recode, David Marcus, the head of Messenger, said: “We’re not going to take cuts of payments. The one thing we traditionally do… is advertising. So we’ll continue focusing on that.”
Currently, Messenger only has two types of advertising: News Feed ads and ads within the Messenger inbox.
Marcus’ comments suggest that it may soon roll out new advertising options on Messenger, something that will be welcomed by many marketers.
