The 2nd Plebeian Secession is not nearly as famous as it's predecessor. In fact, most people probably don't even know that a second secession occurred. However, the 2nd Plebeian Secession was part of series of events that produced arguably the most important pieces of writing in Roman history, the Twelve Tables. The Twelve Tables would be the foundation of Roman law for centuries to come. They guaranteed certain rights to both Plebeians and Patricians and they would guide generations of Romans all across the Mediterranean. But how did we get here? Why was a written series of laws needed? What even were the 12 tables? And why do I think they are the most consequential pieces of writing in the history of the Roman Republic? Let's talk about it.
This is the first in a two part series around the Twelve Tables and the 2nd Plebeian Secession. This video covers much of the background around the events along with actual creation of the Twelve Tables. In the next episode we will dive into just what the Tables contained as well as their impact on the rest of Roman history.
