The UN's top official in Afghanistan has told the Security Council that the Afghan people now feel abandoned, forgotten and punished by circumstances, not of their own making. The Secretary General's Special Representative to the country Deborah Lyons addressed the Council some three months since the Taliban's sweeping takeover of the country after the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops from the country. The Council heard that while the Taliban continued to seek international recognition and ways to overcome the trust deficit with the international community, it had failed to stem the expansion of an affiliate of the ISIS terrorist group - all this while the country remained on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe. Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports that the Taliban has yet to be formally recognised by any country or the United Nations.
