Yes, I got another Commodore PET 2040 4040 DUAL DISK DRIVE!!! I found it on KIJIJI, and it sounded like it was a good gamble, and it was also in pretty wonderful cosmetic condition. There is the name of the school it once was in scratched into the side and there are a few little blemishes here and there, but overall, I would say it is about an 8 in terms of the colour and cleanliness of the unit!
So, it is time to plug it in, and give it a try and see if it works, of if it does not work, what might be wrong with it... Troubleshooting is sometimes troubling...but of course, a major part of it is to do one thing, make on change at a time and assess what happens and go from there.
This drive did just come out of a cold car, but I did give it a bit of time to warm up, perhaps not enough.
Never give up on a 4040 type drive until you massage the disks you are trying to read or copy. What does that mean, well, to properly seat the disks sometimes it is best that they drive is spinning but the drives do not spin when you put a disk into them, so you issue a command to the drive, with the disk in place, but the door open, and just after you send the command (such as catalog) to the drive, slowly close the door once you hear the drive(s) start to spin.
It might sound strange, but it works and if you have some of the older higher capacity drives, you will notice that as you put in a disk, the drive detects this and the motor does spin...but alas, this was not figured out or done on the 2040/4040 disk drives.
Stay tuned as I continue to sort out what is going on with this dual drive unit!
Stay tuned!
