New Modern Design for Artisan Wines
My journey to Australia begins with Grandeur Wellington and Peter Nikolaidis. I had some experience with the Australian wine industry some 10 years ago, but since then I have not had any contact with a winery from this continent and this time zone.
Until one day I received a long and circumstantial email from Peter, who laid the foundations of our partnership on this interesting and unusual wine design project.
As a matter of fact, Artisan started as a redesign of an existing project, but in the process of work things changed so much that in the end a completely new design was born. I will not tell you what was before – I will speak about what happened after.
Peter and I really wanted to make a modern, unconventional and very memorable wine label design. I myself almost always start a new project with a similar attitude, but this time it was somehow different – maybe because of the fact that it was an Australian wine. The range consisted of more than 8 wines, which made the design task even more complicated, because the wines had to be clearly identified from each other with a clear color code. The picture of the project was gradually filling in my imagination and so, after I started working, I was able to create proposals for more than 5 different successful wine concepts. The approved project corresponded to the maximum extent to the task that Peter and I had set for ourselves from the very beginning – a modern, classy, memorable design that would stand out. The design uses as a basis a stylized image of the letter A. The triangular aperture at the bottom of the letter is cut out of paper and thus we received a very original and memorable shape of the label itself. The letter A is stamped with a solid hot-foil, and we added a very specific comb embossing on the whole foil area, which creates great reflections, shapes and volumes on the surface of the foil. In the right half I placed the Grandeur Wellington logo, which is all stamped with a gold hot-foil and embossing, and above it I situated the Artisan brand in black color. Since the label is semi-wrapping and its area is quite large, I decided to add a very delicate detail to the white paper background – fine topographic lines, which with their discreet relief convey the theme of the special climate and terroir of Mclaren Vale. For the first time I use the Epic bottle by Saverglass, which nicely surprised me with its pleasant shape and size, which perfectly fit my project. The design has a certain asymmetry when it is already applied to the bottle, which further contributes to its charm and radiance. I was very happy when I started taking pictures of the finished bottles, because it turned out that the design is very photogenic, you can see all the various details that I had thought about and that I really wanted to be noticed. At the end I want to mention my friends from Dagaprint who did amazing print job making even the tiniest intricate detail shine like a star.
Artisan is very unconventional modern design that I really hope to be appreciated by the Australian wine lovers and become a visual ambassador and icon of Grandeur Wellington superior wines.
