The development of all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft has progressed rapidly over the past few years. The first electric transport aircraft could be certified in the next 2 to 5 years. If electric aviation delivers its promise of lower O&M costs and reduced environmental impacts, these aircraft might be widely adopted by flight operators including air carriers and private aircraft owners. The advent of electric aviation offers significant opportunities and disruptions for airports and aviation systems. Airports and their stakeholders will have new roles to play regarding energy generation and distribution. Electric aircraft may impact revenue from fuel sales. Other users and parts of airports are getting increasingly electrified, which could lead to competition for power supply. Airports need guidance to be ready for the introduction of electric aircraft and the “electrification of everything”.
